Preventive Dentistry

Regular checkups, cleanings, dental exams, and oral cancer screenings all are crucial in maintaining your overall oral health and preventing any problems from occurring.!

Dental Exam

At Rolling Plains Dentistry we recommend our patients come see us every six months for a routine checkup and cleaning, so we can monitor if there are any changes in your gums, teeth, or jaw.

Early detection of dental issues is vital in preventing them from escalating into more serious and costly conditions. For example, identifying and treating cavities in their early stages can prevent the need for extensive dental work like root canals or extractions. Monitoring your gums for gum disease is also important. Catching gum disease early on can be reversed; however, advanced gum disease can only be treated.

Teeth Cleaning

Even with regular brushing and flossing at home, plaque and tartar can still accumulate in hard-to-reach areas of the mouth. Professional dental cleanings, performed by dental hygienists, ensure the thorough removal of plaque and tartar buildup from your teeth.

By getting rid of these harmful substances, dental cleanings significantly reduce the risk of cavities and gum disease. Dental cleanings also help prevent bad breath, enhance the appearance of your teeth, and promote a fresher, healthier mouth.

Dentistry for Kids

Professional dental care is a crucial part of your child's oral health. Be sure to schedule your child's first appointment by the time their first teeth erupt, or before their first birthday. Scheduling regular appointments allows us to monitor the development of their oral health. Developmental problems are easier to treat in the beginning stages. As your child grows older, we can establish a strong foundation for their oral health, one that will ensure a lifetime of healthy, beautiful teeth.

Periodontal Care

Your periodontal (gum) tissues are just as important as your teeth. Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in the United States. Periodontal disease is the result of an infection in the gum tissues, connective ligaments, and eventually the alveolar bone.

The disease is characterized by gums that are swollen, red, and tend to bleed during brushing and flossing. Luckily, periodontal disease is easy to prevent and treat if it is caught early enough. If we notice signs of advanced periodontal disease, we may recommend a scaling and root planing procedure. The goal is to return your gums to a pink, healthy state.

Oral Cancer Screening

During your regular exam, we will also perform an oral cancer screening. Oral cancer screenings are quick and painless. The dentist will check your head, neck, face, inside out and outside of your mouth for any visible changes such as lumps, bumps, lesions, or discolorations.

The importance of oral cancer screenings should not be diminished. Your dentist should be performing one at least once a year. If you are not sure if you have had an oral cancer screening recently, please let us know and we will be sure to do a screening at your next exam.

Mouth Guard

A mouthguard will protect your teeth and prevent dental emergencies. If you suffer from bruxism (teeth grinding), we may recommend a night guard. Many patients with bruxism tend to grind their teeth during sleep. A night guard acts as a barrier that prevents enamel wear.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is characterized by the repeated cessation of breathing during sleep. There are three main types of sleep apnea: obstructive, central, and complex. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common form caused by the relaxation of the muscles in the throat. We offer oral appliances to alleviate the symptoms of sleep apnea. An oral appliance can provide you with safer and more restful sleep!

TMJ

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ), allows us to move our joint forwards, backward, and side-to-side. Any problems that prevent us from using this joint properly are known as TMD or temporomandibular joint disorders. We provide some treatments designed to alleviate any pain or discomfort associated with the TMJ.

The Importance of Preventive Care

Regular dental checkups, cleanings, and exams offer several benefits that extend beyond maintaining a bright smile.
•  Prevention: Early detection of dental problems enables prompt treatment, preventing more severe issues and potential tooth loss.
•  Gum Health: Regular cleanings reduce the risk of gum disease, which has been linked to systemic health conditions like heart disease and diabetes.
•  Oral Cancer Detection: Dental exams include screenings for oral cancer, enabling timely diagnosis and treatment if needed.
•  Overall Health: Good oral health is closely connected to overall health. Maintaining a healthy mouth can contribute to better overall well-being and quality of life.

By making preventive dental care a priority, you can enjoy a lifetime of healthy smiles and reduce the likelihood of developing serious dental issues in the future.
